Policy

Te Pāti Māori will look after you the way a Marae looks after all people. Everyone will have a home, be cared for, protected, connected, empowered, and sovereign. Together, we will be the kaitiaki our whenua needs us to be.

That means:

Fairness in wealth and resources
Safe, secure housing
Māori-led health, education, disability and justice
Protection of whenua, wai and climate
Te Tiriti-based constitutional transformation

Kai Sovereignty preview image

Kai Sovereignty

What we’ll do Protect Māori food systems (including seed sovereignty, rejecting GE foods, and upholding WAI262). Invest in community food systems and regenerative Māori agriculture. Break corporate control by supporting Māori-owned supermarkets and protecting local kai sellers. Increase access to land for food production. Why it matters Aotearoa grows enough kai to feed everyone, yet too many whānau are goinghungry. That is not scarcity, it is system failure. Kai sovereignty means affordable,healthy kai connected to whenua, whakapapa, and Māori control.

What we’ll do End the pipeline that removes Māori children from their people. Restore whānau authority and invest in whānau-led care. Make the state accountable for harm caused through uplifts and placements. Why it matters Our tamariki are not state problems to be managed. They are whakapapa, promise, and future leaders born to thrive. Protecting mokopuna Māori means restoring whānau authority and ending the systems that separate our children from their people.

What we’ll do Support Māori-led disability services and decision-making. Make support easier to access and less degrading. Fund support that fits whānau realities, not bureaucratic categories. Why it matters Disabled Māori deserve support that honours their mana, their whānau, and their right to live fully. No one should have to fight a degrading system just to access the care, dignity, and support they are entitled to.

What we’ll do Build and support more public and affordable homes. Make it easier to build homes on Māori/ancestral land. Stop speculation and land-banking (including action on vacant properties). Why it matters A warm, safe, secure home is not a luxury. It is the ground everything else stands on: health, education, safety, stability, and hope. Our people deserve homes, not waiting lists, overcrowding, or speculation.

What we’ll do Build Māori-led education authority and solutions. Embed mātauranga Māori properly across learning. Remove barriers that block whānau from education and training. Support Māori governance and decision-making in education. Why it matters Education should never teach our tamariki to leave themselves at the door. It should strengthen identity, grow confidence, open pathways, and prepare our people to lead in the world as Māori.

What we’ll do Invest in Toi Māori and Māori creative industries. Protect Māori cultural rights and expressions. Back Māori-led arts infrastructure, funding, and pathways. Why it matters Toi Māori is not decoration. It is truth-telling, resistance, healing, identity, and legacy. Our art carries the stories others tried to silence and projects our imagination into the future.

What we’ll do Strengthen te reo Māori and normalise it everywhere. Invest in te reo Māori learning pathways and community-led language revitalisation. Make sure the state is accountable for protecting te reo Māori. Why it matters Te reo Māori is not just a language. It is identity, memory, authority, and the sound of our survival. When te reo thrives, our people stand taller and our nation becomes more honest about who it is.

What we’ll do Re-build and strengthen Māori-led health authority and solutions. Shift the system toward prevention and whānau wellbeing, not just crisis response. Make services accessible, culturally safe, and accountable to Māori. Why it matters A health system that does not understand Māori will keep failing Māori. Our people deserve care that sees the whole person, strengthens whānau, prevents harm, and is accountable to the communities it serves.

What we’ll do Commit to Te Tiriti-based constitutional change. Strengthen Māori political authority and governance structures. Progress land back and rangatiratanga commitments under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Why it matters Without constitutional transformation, every gain our people make can be undone by the next government. Mana motuhake means power must return to where it belongs: with tangata whenua, hapū, iwi, whānau, and our people.

What we’ll do Make sure the wealthiest pay their fair share. Use that revenue to fund housing, health, education and whānau support. Why it matters When the system rewards the top and squeezes everyone else, poverty becomes permanent. A country that protects the wealthy while whānau go without is not fair, it is rigged. Tax is one of the ways we return power, resources, and opportunity back to the people who keep this country moving.

What we’ll do Invest in sport and community initiatives that build belonging, wellbeing, and opportunity. Support pathways for rangatahi through local clubs, programmes, and facilities. Why it matters Sport is more than a game. It builds belonging, discipline, leadership, confidence, and connection. Strong clubs and community pathways give our rangatahi places to stand, people to stand with, and futures to run toward.

What we’ll do Build Māori-led justice authority and community solutions. Reform laws that criminalise poverty and survival. Move away from mass imprisonment and toward long-term transformation. Why it matters A system that cages Māori generation after generation is not failing by accident. True justice means ending the machinery that criminalises poverty, trauma, and survival, and building Māori-led solutions that restore mana, safety, and futures.

What we’ll do Build Māori-led institutions and funds that grow Māori enterprise. Support trade, innovation, and long-term Māori wealth building. Protect Māori data and knowledge (data sovereignty). Why it matters Māori prosperity cannot rely on permission from systems built to exclude us. Economic power is political power. This is about restoring what was taken, growing Māori wealth, and building a future where our people thrive on our own terms.

What we’ll do Lift incomes so people can live with dignity. Strengthen welfare so whānau aren’t punished for being poor. Back practical cost-of-living relief (including transport affordability). Why it matters When whānau can’t meet the basics, everything else around them breaks - their health, their learning, their stability and their safety. No whānau should be forced to choose between kai, rent, power, transport, medicine, or school costs. When the basics become unaffordable, dignity is stripped away. We will fight for an economy where our people can live, not just survive.

What we’ll do Protect the wellbeing, safety, and dignity of takatāpui Māori. Make sure public services are inclusive, accessible, and accountable. Why it matters Takatāpui Māori deserve to live safely and fully as themselves; without discrimination, exclusion, or harm. Takatāpui Māori deserve to live with safety, dignity, joy, and full belonging in their whānau, hapori, and nation. No one should be pushed to the margins for being wholly themselves.

What we’ll do Declare Aotearoa a militarily neutral nation. Reset foreign policy to be independent, grounded in Māori values, and centred on Pacific and Indigenous relationships. Review and withdraw from military alignments that undermine sovereignty. Refocus the Defence Force on protection, disaster response, and Pacific support. Uphold international human rights and hold war criminals to account. Why it matters Neutrality is mana motuhake in action. Our sovereignty shouldn’t be dictated by foreign Neutrality is mana motuhake in action. Our foreign policy should not be dictated by powerful nations, military alliances, or wars that are not ours. Aotearoa must stand for peace, justice, Indigenous solidarity, and Pacific protection.

What we’ll do Assert Māori rights and authority over freshwater. Stop decisions being made without Māori consent. Ensure resources are protected and benefits are shared fairly. Why it matters Water is life. It carries whakapapa, sustains our whenua, feeds our people, and binds generations together. Decisions about wai must sit with those who have carried responsibility for it since time immemorial.

What we’ll do Protect whenua and moana from extractive industries (including banning seabed mining). Invest in climate resilience for communities most at risk. Back regenerative and sustainable approaches aligned with Māori values. Why it matters Our whenua, awa, moana, marae, wāhi tapu, mahinga kai and whakapapa are not resources to be exploited. They are our inheritance, our responsibility, and our future. Climate justice is about protecting our right to live safely, affordably, and sovereign on our own whenua.
